Trump Angered by India's Tariff Request: 'Should Have Done It Sooner'

U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized India for requesting a reduction of tariffs to zero percent, saying this should have happened long ago. He made the comments on his social media platform, Truth Social, just hours after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned from China.

The Trump administration has imposed a 50 percent tariff on Indian imports, including a 25 percent levy on oil purchased from Russia. Trump argued that India’s oil imports indirectly support Russia in its attacks on Ukraine, although he has so far refrained from imposing direct sanctions on Moscow.

India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar opposed the tariffs, pointing out that similar rules have not been applied to China or the European Union—both of which are major importers of Russian crude oil and LNG.

Trump also highlighted the trade imbalance between the two countries, noting that while the U.S. does little business with India, India engages heavily with American companies. He described India’s high tariffs as a major obstacle to U.S. businesses and called the situation a “completely one-sided disaster.”

The president further criticized India for buying most of its oil and military equipment from Russia, contributing to the U.S.-India trade deficit. Reports also suggest Trump was irritated by India’s claim that he had no role in facilitating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in May.

In an open letter to the American public, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian outlined his position, saying Iran has never pursued aggression or colonial ambitions, nor initiated attacks on other countries, but has always responded firmly when attacked.

The letter, published on Wednesday (April 1) by the state-run media outlet Press TV, describes Iran as one of the world’s oldest and most continuous civilizations. Pezeshkian also argued that portraying Iran as a “security threat” does not align with historical or observable reality; rather, it reflects the political and economic interests of powerful states.

The letter further claims that the creation of an “enemy” is often used to justify maintaining influence, sustaining military dominance, supporting the arms industry, and controlling strategic markets. In this context, Iran is being negatively portrayed.

The Iranian president warned that any attacks on Iran’s energy, electricity, and industrial infrastructure, or on its civilian population, would be considered war crimes under international law. He added that the consequences of such actions would not be confined to Iran or the Middle East, but could extend globally.

Ceasefire proposal to the United States claim is baseless: Iran

Iran has stated that no proposal regarding a ceasefire has been made to the United States. The government has firmly rejected such claims as “completely false and baseless.”

On Wednesday (April 1), Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei said in a statement to state media that there has been no communication or exchange of proposals with Washington regarding a ceasefire.

Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Iran’s new leadership had contacted the United States regarding a ceasefire.

According to his remarks, such a proposal would only be considered if the Strait of Hormuz is fully “open and normal.”

However, Tehran has directly dismissed these allegations, stating that there has been no discussion or proposal on a ceasefire whatsoever.

Amid this situation, the contradictory statements from both sides have further deepened uncertainty, adding to the ongoing tensions.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has stated that it maintains full control over the Strait of Hormuz, while also dismissing recent remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump as irrelevant. The IRGC made it clear that there is no question of opening this strategic waterway for its adversaries.

The information was reported by Al Jazeera on Wednesday (April 1). Earlier, Trump claimed that the Iranian president had proposed a ceasefire. However, he added a condition that the United States would not consider any ceasefire unless the Strait of Hormuz was operating normally, safely, and freely for navigation.

Meanwhile, Tehran has not officially confirmed any such ceasefire proposal. Instead, the IRGC’s statement suggests that Iran is not willing to compromise on the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz and is firmly maintaining its position.

U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran’s president has sent a ceasefire proposal to the United States. However, he made it clear that the U.S. will not consider any ceasefire unless the Strait of Hormuz is fully “open, secure, and functioning normally.”

On Wednesday (April 1), Trump shared this claim in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social. In the post, he described Iran’s current president as comparatively less aggressive and more pragmatic than previous leaders.

At the same time, issuing a strong warning, Trump said that U.S. military operations will continue unless the stated conditions are met. He also hinted that even tougher measures could be taken if necessary.

The Trump administration has consistently maintained that ensuring normal maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is one of the key conditions for ending the conflict. However, in earlier statements, Trump had opposed a ceasefire and expressed confidence in U.S. military strength.

A major explosion video shared by former U.S. President Donald Trump has drawn attention, with claims that a nearly 900 kg “bunker buster” bomb was used in Isfahan, Iran.

In the video of the early Tuesday explosion, massive flames can be seen lighting up the night sky. Several international media outlets suggest it could be footage of a possible joint U.S.–Israel strike on a key weapons storage facility in Isfahan. However, the authenticity of the video has not been independently verified, and Trump has not provided a clear explanation regarding it.

According to reports, bombs weighing around 2,000 pounds (over 900 kg) were used in the attack. Such “bunker buster” bombs are designed to penetrate deep underground or through reinforced concrete before detonating.

Following the strike, multiple secondary explosions reportedly occurred, producing large fires and powerful shockwaves that spread across the area.

The incident has raised concerns about a potential escalation of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. At the same time, Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey are engaged in diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions and seeking a peaceful resolution.

Fires have erupted in several vehicles in central Israel after debris from newly launched Iranian missiles fell in different areas, according to U.S. media outlet CNN.

Israeli police reported that fragments of missiles were scattered across multiple locations, including Tel Aviv and nearby areas. However, no casualties have been reported so far.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said search and rescue operations are underway in the affected areas.

An IDF spokesperson suggested, based on the pattern of impact, that the damage may have been caused by cluster-type munitions.

A Kuwaiti oil tanker named Al-Salmi, anchored at Dubai Port in the United Arab Emirates, has reportedly come under attack, according to the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC). The information was reported by Al Jazeera.

In a statement, KPC described the incident as a “direct and criminal” attack by Iran. The statement, published by the Kuwait News Agency, said the tanker was fully loaded with oil at the time of the attack.

The assault caused structural damage to the vessel and sparked a fire onboard. There are concerns that the incident could lead to an oil spill in the surrounding waters.

Meanwhile, the Dubai Media Office confirmed that all 24 crew members on board are safe. Firefighting efforts are still ongoing to bring the blaze under control.

Tehran has accused the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of failing to take a clear stance on the reported attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran’s nuclear facilities. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei described the agency’s silence as questionable.

In an interview with the state-run Tasnim News Agency, Baghaei said that the attacks by the United States and Israel are a clear violation of international law. However, he added that the IAEA’s silence on the matter is further complicating the situation.

He also criticized IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, claiming that instead of condemning the attacks, Grossi has made remarks that are contributing to escalating tensions.

The United Kingdom has made it clear that it will not become involved in the ongoing conflict between Iran, Israel, and the United States, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said.

Responding to journalists on Monday, he stated that there are no plans to deploy British troops to the Middle East and no intention of conducting any military operations on Iranian territory. In his words, the UK has no involvement in this war.

Starmer also said the government is closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary defensive measures. The aim is to ensure the safety of British citizens, protect national interests, and support regional allies.

Highlighting the importance of the Strait of Hormuz, he said the UK will work to help keep the route open for navigation. However, he stressed that Britain must not be drawn into the conflict under any circumstances.
