Brazil announce 2026 World Cup squad with Neymar included

Brazil have announced their final 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Neymar emerging as the biggest talking point after being included in the team.

The squad was officially revealed at the Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro. Neymar has returned to the national team after a long absence and will once again wear the Brazil jersey for the first time since 2023.

Alongside experienced players, the squad features a strong group of young talents. However, one of the major surprises is the omission of Rodrygo. The inclusion of Igor Thiago, Endrick, and Luiz Henrique has also drawn attention.

Brazil will begin their World Cup campaign against Morocco. Their other group-stage opponents are Haiti and Scotland.

Bangladesh has once again written a story of success in the SAFF Under-20 Championship. In the final, they defeated India 4–2 in a penalty shootout to secure the title for the second consecutive time, with the red-and-green youth team lifting the trophy.

The match was level at the end of regular time, forcing a penalty shootout, where Bangladesh showed composure and clinched the victory.

Earlier, Bangladesh also won the title in the 2024 edition. This latest triumph is therefore seen as a continuation of the team’s consistent success.

IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has finally reacted to the controversy surrounding Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman’s exclusion from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), describing the incident as “unfortunate.”

During last December’s auction, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) signed Mustafizur for 9.5 crore rupees. However, he was released within a month. It later emerged that the decision was not based on injury or performance, but was taken following instructions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

In an interview with the Financial Times, Dhumal said he was not fully aware of the detailed reasoning behind the decision but found the incident disappointing. He added that there should be no direct government interference in the administration of cricket, although in reality external circumstances can sometimes have an impact.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) protested the incident. Citing security concerns, they announced a boycott of the 2026 T20 World Cup, stating that Bangladesh would only participate if the tournament is moved outside India.

However, the proposal was not accepted by the ICC. Eventually, Scotland was given Bangladesh’s place in the tournament.

Mustafizur Rahman is currently playing in the Pakistan Super League. He is representing Lahore Qalandars under a 6.44 crore rupee contract and is keeping busy on the field.

History was made on Tuesday at the National Stadium during the Asian Cup qualifiers. The packed gallery of spectators was eagerly waiting for a thrilling contest—but Bangladesh turned that contest into a priceless victory. After a long gap of 22 years, the long-cherished dream of defeating India finally came true. The team played with strong discipline, confidence, and perfect coordination, changing the course of the match within just 11 minutes. From that moment on, Bangladesh maintained the lead and ultimately secured the much-desired win with this masterstroke.

At the beginning of the match, India showed dominance in ball possession, but Bangladesh struck first. Rakib Hossain delivered an accurate cross from the left, which was finished brilliantly by Sheikh Morsalin. It was his seventh goal in the red-and-green jersey and a moment that opened the door to history.

Bangladesh last defeated India in January 2003, in the semifinal of the SAFF Championship. For the next 22 years, Bangladesh endured a drought of victories against India. But this time, with the coordination of Hamza Choudhury, Shommit Shome, and other players, that long wait finally ended.

In Tuesday’s match at the National Stadium, Bangladesh secured a memorable 1–0 victory over India. The winning goal was scored by Sheikh Morsalin—a moment that will remain unforgettable for football fans.

Bangladesh suffered defeat in the third and final T20I against the West Indies at Chattogram’s Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, completing a series whitewash at home for the first time in four years. The last time Bangladesh faced such humiliation on home soil was against Pakistan in 2021.

After winning the toss and opting to bat, Bangladesh managed only 151 runs, losing all 10 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Tamim Iqbal Hasan was the lone standout with a blistering 89 off 51 balls, while Saif Hassan added 23 runs. The rest of the batting lineup failed to reach double figures.

For the West Indies, Romario Shepherd was the most successful bowler, taking 3 wickets. Khary Pierre and Jason Holder claimed 2 wickets each, and Akil Hossain and Roston Chase picked up 1 wicket apiece.

Chasing the target, the West Indies had a shaky start, losing 3 wickets for 52 runs in 7.3 overs. However, a crucial fourth-wicket partnership between Roston Chase and Akim Auguste added 91 runs, putting them firmly in control of the match.

Chase scored 50 off 29 balls and Auguste made 50 off 25 balls before both were dismissed. Captain Rovman Powell and Muti saw the team home, securing victory in 16.5 overs with 5 wickets in hand.

For Bangladesh, Rishad Hossain took 3 wickets, while Mehedi Hasan and Nasum Ahmed took 1 each.

In Chattogram, the Bangladesh cricket team began the three-match T20 series with a 16-run defeat against the West Indies, owing to a poor batting performance. Chasing a target of 165 set by the visitors, the home side was bowled out for 149 at the end of their allotted overs. As a result, the Caribbean team takes a 1–0 lead in the series.

West Indies won the toss and opted to bat first. Openers Athenage and Brandon King gave their team a solid start with cautious batting, adding 59 runs for the first wicket. Athenage fell for 34 to a delivery from Rishad Hossain, breaking the opening partnership. Taskeen Ahmed then struck with brilliant bowling, dismissing both Brandon King (33) and Rutherford. At 82 for 3, West Indies briefly found themselves under pressure, but the middle and late order recovered swiftly.

Captain Shai Hope and Rovman Powell forged an exceptional partnership towards the end, taking the team to a challenging total. Hope remained unbeaten on 46 off 28 balls, while Powell played a fiery 44* off 28 deliveries. In the final over, Powell thrilled the crowd by hitting three consecutive sixes off Tanzim Hasan, completing a 45-run unbeaten partnership in 45 balls, which turned the momentum of the innings in favor of the visitors.

Chasing the target, Bangladesh struggled from the outset. Within 57 runs, five batsmen were back in the pavilion. With the openers failing, the middle order also couldn’t stabilize the innings. Towhid Hridoy was dismissed for 28, leaving Bangladesh at 77 for six. Tanzim Sakib (33) and Nasum Ahmed (20) tried to build some resistance, but the victory remained out of reach.

Entering the final over needing 17 runs, Taskeen Ahmed hit a huge six over deep mid-wicket on the first ball, raising hopes in the stands, but was run out on the next delivery. Bangladesh fell short by 16 runs, concluding the match in defeat.

With this loss, Bangladesh trails 1–0 in the three-match series. To stay alive in the contest, a victory in the second match is imperative.

After a long wait of one and a half years, Bangladesh celebrated a 2–1 victory over West Indies to win the ODI series. In the series-deciding third ODI at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Thursday (October 23), brilliant batting by Soumya Sarkar and Saif Hassan and spin wizardry from Nasum Ahmed and Rishad Hossain powered the Tigers to a commanding 179-run win.

Batting first after winning the toss, the hosts posted a formidable total of 296 runs. Openers Soumya Sarkar and Saif Hassan put together a 176-run partnership, giving Bangladesh early control of the match. Soumya scored 91 off 86 balls, hitting 7 fours and 4 sixes, while Saif contributed a dazzling 80 off 72 balls with 6 fours and 6 sixes.

After the opening stand was broken, Shanto (44) and Tauhid Hridoy (28) tried to keep the scoreboard moving, but the middle order couldn’t convert starts into big scores. Towards the end, Mehedi Hasan Miraz (17) and Nurul Hasan Sohan (16)* accelerated the innings, helping Bangladesh finish at 296/8 in 50 overs. For the visitors, Akil Hossain took 4 wickets for 41 runs.

Chasing 297, the West Indies batting lineup struggled from the start against the spin duo of Nasum Ahmed and Rishad Hossain. They lost 3 wickets for just 35 runs, with captain Shai Hope dismissed by Tanvir Islam, deepening the crisis.

Rishad’s spin further dismantled the Caribbean side, who were all out for 117 in the 29th over. The top scorer was Akil Hossain with 27 runs at number 10. Justin Greaves tried to resist but couldn’t make a meaningful impact.

For Bangladesh, Nasum Ahmed and Rishad Hossain claimed 3 wickets each, while Miraz and Tanvir Islam took 2 wickets apiece.

With this win, Bangladesh enjoyed an ODI series triumph after 18 months. The two teams will now face off in the T20I series starting Monday (October 27) in Chattogram.

Bangladesh’s dream of reaching the semi-finals ended as they lost a do-or-die match against Sri Lanka. Despite restricting the Lankan side to 202 runs, the Tigers fell short by just 7 runs, missing out on a last-minute victory.

In the match held in Mumbai, Sri Lanka batted first and posted a competitive total of 202 runs. Opener Vishmi Gunaratne fell to Marufa on the very first ball, but Chamari Athapaththu steadied the innings with a 72-run second-wicket partnership before getting out after scoring 46. Nilashka contributed 37 runs before falling to a delivery from Swarna. Regular wickets ensured that Sri Lanka’s innings ended at 202. Swarna Akter took 3 wickets for Bangladesh, while Rabeya Khan claimed 2 wickets.

Chasing 203, Bangladesh lost Rubaiya Haider early. The team slipped further when Farzana was dismissed at 24 runs. Sobhana Mostari managed only 8 runs before getting out, leaving Bangladesh at 44 for 3. A brilliant 82-run partnership between Sharmin Akter and Nigar Sultana revived Bangladesh’s innings. Shamima, who scored 64, had to leave the field due to injury. Jyoti then took charge, scoring a fifty and keeping Bangladesh in the hunt.

In the final moments, Bangladesh needed 10 runs from 9 balls with 6 wickets in hand, but lost 5 wickets while scoring just 1 run. Jyoti finished with 77 runs, and Bangladesh’s hopes of victory and a semi-final berth ended.

In the final Group B match of the Asia Cup, Afghanistan lost to Sri Lanka by 6 wickets, securing Super Four spots for both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Sri Lanka booked their place in the Super Four of the Asia Cup with a win over Afghanistan in the final Group B match. At the same time, Bangladesh also secured their spot in the next stage.

On Thursday (18 September) at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, Afghanistan won the toss and chose to bat first, posting a challenging total of 169 runs. In response, Sri Lanka chased down the target with 8 balls to spare, winning by 6 wickets.

During the match, commentator Russell Arnold remarked that Sri Lanka’s victory was being celebrated not just in Colombo but also in cities across Bangladesh like Dhaka. The outcome of the Afghanistan-Sri Lanka match was crucial for determining the Super Four qualification of Liton Das and Mustafizur Rahman.

The Asia Cup T20 will begin on September 9 in the United Arab Emirates. The 20-over tournament will run until September 28. After the tournament, Bangladesh will play a bilateral series against Afghanistan at the same venue.

On Saturday (August 16), the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced the full schedule for the series. According to the schedule, the first T20I will be held on October 2, followed by the second and third matches on October 4 and October 6, respectively. The ODI series will start on October 9, with the second and third matches scheduled for October 11 and October 14.

ACB Chief Executive Naseeb Khan expressed his excitement about the series, saying, “We are proud to host Bangladesh for this series. It strengthens the mutual relationship between our boards and demonstrates that world-class cricket can be delivered even at neutral venues.”

Bangladesh and Afghanistan will face each other earlier in the Asia Cup as well. The two teams are scheduled to play in Group B on September 16. If Bangladesh qualifies for the Super Four stage, the team will return home after playing back-to-back tournaments.

This bilateral series was originally part of the postponed 2024 series. Last year, Bangladesh and Afghanistan were scheduled to play two Tests, three ODIs, and three T20Is in July 2024, but the series was delayed due to scheduling conflicts. It is now set to take place in the UAE.

Following the Afghanistan series, Bangladesh will host the West Indies at home, playing three T20Is and an equal number of ODIs against the Caribbean side.
