Garment traders’ meet focuses on kidswear

Kolkata: The 57th garment buyers and sellers meet, organised at Science City grounds by the West Bengal Garment Manufacturers and Dealers Association (WBGMDA), is focusing on kidswear this time. According to association members, kidswear market in Bengal grew to Rs 5,000 crore in 2024 from Rs 2,140 crore in 2014.

Association president Hari Kishan Rathi urged state industry and commerce minister Shashi Panja, who inaugurated the meet on Saturday, to set up a garment park.

The minister, however, replied: "The state will help you if you set up the garment park on land available with govt. But no new land will be acquired by govt for this." She also mentioned that the garment park at Beleghata had received Rs 256 crore investment so far.

WBGMDA secretary Devendra Baid said the three-day meet, which sees participation from garment wholesalers across the country, is likely to garner transactions worth Rs 1,000 crore to Rs 1,200 crore.
