We must not forget about the Rohingya

Myanmar have long neglected their duties to take back their own people, and continue to mistreat them to this It is encouraging to see UN Secretary-General António Guterres responding to Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus’s letter sent earlier this month about his concerns regarding the lack of action surrounding the Rohingya, giving some much needed assurance for finding a solution.
In the midst of all of the challenges Bangladesh has faced - and is continuing to navigate - over the past several months, the Rohingya crisis had, regrettably, become an afterthought for manHowever, the impact of hosting the over one million Rohingya in Bangladesh continues to be acutely felt by us; we have already gone above and beyond as a nation over several years now, exhausting our own limited resources in the procesYet, it is truly regrettable that we have failed to see any semblance of a viable long-term solution to the crisis.
This newspaper has over the years called out the shocking lack of support from the international community with regard to holding Myanmar accountable for its failures towards its own people, and not much has changed regarding this. With António Guterres stating that the United Nations will continue its efforts to mobilize the international community to support Bangladesh as a host to the Rohingya, we hope and expect him to stay true to his words.
Beyond the support needed for Bangladesh as a host nation to the Rohingya refugees however is the need for their repatriation, which remains the only acceptable long-term solution.Myanmar have long neglected their duties to take back their own people, and continue to mistreat them to this day. If the United Nations is serious about helping us with the Rohingya situation, then it must also engage the international community to speak out against the actions of the Myanmar regime against the Rohingya and facilitate their safe and dignified repatriation.
