NCP Convenor Nahid calls for swift trial of mass killings
We must ensure that the 2024 mass uprising does not go in vain'

Nahid Islam, convenor of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has called for the swift execution of trials for mass killings in Bangladesh, emphasizing that the political fate of the Awami League must be determined through judicial proceedings in the country. He made the comments on Tuesday morning while placing wreaths at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar. The mass uprising carried a promise—that those responsible for these killings and the oppression of the past 15 years will face justice on this very soil,” he said.
“We urge the interim government to ensure that the people of Bangladesh witness these trials without delay. Once justice is served, we expect the national consensus commission on reforms to immediately initiate a national dialogue and implement the July Charter and July Nahid Islam further said: “Despite gaining independence through the Liberation War of 1971, our sovereignty has repeatedly come under threat. Our democratic institutions have crumbled time and again. We have failed to establish a truly democratic constitution—instead, a one-party constitution planted the seeds of fascism and authoritarian ruleHe added: “The democratic process has been continuously stalled. This time, we must ensure that the 2024 mass uprising does not go in vain. A new Bangladesh cannot emerge while retaining the old constitution and governance structure. Simply changing the government will not secure the people's welfare. That is why we assert that the 2024 mass uprising—where students and the public have shed blood—must lead not only to a change in leadership but also to a complete overhaul of the governance framework and constitution. Only then can true democracy, justice, and equality be ensured.”Earlier, NCP leaders and activists paid tribute at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar.
Around 7am, they entered the memorial and placed floral wreaths in honor of the martyrs.NCP Convenor Nahid Islam, General Secretary Akhtar Hossen, and other party leaders and activists were present at the event.
