Reovirus has been detected for the first time in the country. The Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) found the virus in the bodies of five people. However, no complications were seen in any case. All five returned home after treatment. The health department said that there is nothing to worry about the virus.
Director of IEDCR Professor Tahmina Shireen said that many people are infected with Nipah virus every year by consuming raw juice of dates. IEDCR recently tested samples of 48 people after seeing such symptoms. Nipah virus was not found among them but reovirus was found in the body of five people. The virus was identified in IEDCR's regular research with Columbia University in the US to search for new pathogens.
Reovirus spreads through sneezing and coughing. If infected, breathing problems, fever, headache, vomiting and diarrhea may occur. In severe cases, pneumonia, amniotic encephalitis or inflammation of the brain may also occur. Children and the elderly are more affected.
Professor Tahmina Shirin also said that many encephalitis patients have been found in the country. But the cause cannot be found. This research will help in the treatment of these patients.
Reo virus was first detected in the world in 1950. Prevalence increases during winter.
