Police used baton charges and water cannons to disperse a protest by candidates whose appointments as assistant teachers in government primary schools were canceled following a High Court verdict.The incident took place around 3pm on Friday in front of the chief adviser’s residence, Jamuna.

Several protesters were reportedly injured, including a woman who was taken to the hospital in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw.

Earlier in the morning, the affected candidates gathered in front of the Jatiya Press Club and later marched toward the chief adviser’s residence.

Police attempted to block them, but they managed to reach the premises and began chanting slogans, leading to a verbal altercation with law Subsequently, police baton-charged and used water cannons to disperse the protesters.

Previously, in October of last year, 6,531 candidates were recommended for final appointment in the third phase of primary school teacher recruitment.However, following a High Court verdict, the results were annulled due to the application of the quota system.

On Thursday morning, a High Court bench comprising Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Sikder Mahmudur Razi declared the published results void.
